Today begins the first session in how to make your own kombucha by growing a scoby. If you are new to the kombucha klub and have no clue what I am talking about! Check out my post on how I reduce my cravings for soda by drinking kombucha. If you have never had kombucha, I suggest you try a bottle to see if you like it before you try and make your own. It’s a fizzy drink that has an after taste of apple cider vinegar. I am not a fan of drinking plain kombucha. I like to enjoy it with a variety of flavors. One flavor I am hooked on is pineapple kombucha!!
Making kombucha is a fairly simple process. All you need is sugar, water, tea, a nice dark place and it will ferment. Komucha does ferment slower in the winter and rapidly in the summer. I find that in the winter my kombucha takes about 2-3 weeks for it to ferment, and in the summer it only takes a few days.
Once you get started you will find the flavors for making your own fizzy drinks are endless and experimenting is the key! Now let’s get started!
Kombucha Recipe (how to grow your own scoby):
32oz glass jar (larger the better)
16 oz bottle of Kombucha (I used GT Synergy Original)
1 ½ cups water
1 heaping cup of sugar (I used raw)
3-4 bags of green tea (I used Lipton)
Recipe Directions: Place tea bags in glass jar and set aside. In a small pot bring water to a boil; once the water is boiling turn burner off and stir in sugar until it has completely dissolved. One sugar has dissolved add water to the jar; place a lid over the jar and let it cool. Once the tea has cool down (no hot tea) take tea bags out of the jar and add the whole bottle of kombucha to the jar. Place a coffee filter and rubber band over the jar and keep in a cool dark place (not the refrigerator).
Side Note: The scoby will take up to four weeks to grow (depending on the weather) once you have a little baby scoby now you can make homemade soda! Check back for updates on the scoby!
